Just got home from the most well attended fly fishing show in recent history, with most manufacturers of fly fishing stuff there showing off their new stuff. The list of Celebrate speakers included Lefty Kreh, Nick Curcione, Ed Joworowski, Cathy and Barry Beck, George Daniel, Jeff Currier, Bruce Chard, Brian and Sarah Gardner, Bob Jacklin, and dozens of other great speakers and authors. There where close to a hundred expert fly tiers demonstrating and teaching folks how to create the most diverse collection of flies that I have ever seen at any event.
Being a fly reel fanatic, the dozens of fly reel manufacturers included Tibor, Abel, Hatch, TFO, Redington, Solitude, Sea Level, Sage, Hardy, Nautilus, along with many more that I cannot remember. Jack Charlton from Mako Reels was at this show for the first time. The only fly reel manufacturers that were missing were Orvis, Ross, and Islander Reels. It was awesome to see the thousands of fly fishing anglers filling the isles checking out the latest equipment. The many fly shops selling at the show were packed, I spoke with several people who ran out of stock by Saturday afternoon.
Art work, vices, materials, hooks, clothing, waders, fly line companies, rain gear, along with lodges from all over the world, and guides selling fly fishing trips locally and throughout the world were all at this event. At all times there were dozens of fly tiers tying while five destination theaters were full with folks booking trips and the three big seminar rooms were packed as folks watched major celebrates showing some incredible power point presentations. Lefty Kreh had dozens of people following him around all day for book signings, and when he did his casting demonstrations you could not get near the casting pond, the largest crowd ever.
Brian Carson of "Clear Cure Goo" was demonstrating this new fast curing fly tying product which seemed to me to be drawing a large crowd, Ray Hutcherson, of Sea Level Fly Fishing, had his new series of Salt Water Fly Rods and Reels which drew a lot of attention, and George Harris, the artist who makes fish pins, was packed all day.
Many of these same folks will be heading to Charlotte, NC, to join the numerous local North Carolina and national celebrities including Bob Clouser, Joe Shute, Gary Dubiel, Gary and Wanda Taylor, Sarah Gardner and Brian Horsley, and dozens more. It is amazing watching the fly fishing community beginning to come out of the recent recession and having fun while sharing their passion for our sport.
After Charlotte I will head to Florida to work in the Casa Vieja Lodge booth and present programs in "The Big Game Room" at the Miami Boat Show. If you are in South Florida please stop by and say hello. After the Miami Boat Show I will head out to "The Fly Fishing Show" in Pleasanton, CA, this may be an even bigger show than the one in New Jersey. Please if you are in the area come by the show and say hello or come to one of my seminars about catching billfish on fly. I hope to have a fishing report from Guatemala real soon, stay tuned, I love my job.
